Shanghai Shiok! is racy. Not.

What’s worst than being censored in China?

Answer: Being censored by web filtering services that are designed to protect your employees (and children) from viewing adult content online.

A Twitter friend informed me this morning that his girlfriend’s office has blocked my blog, flagging it as porn. Porn! This is the fifth time in the last month that someone has alerted me to my blog’s current standing among web filters. The other places where my blog has been blocked and flagged as inappropriate: A junior college in Singapore, an American law firm in Ho Chi Minh City, an accounting firm in Kuala Lumpur, and Fermilab in Illinois! The particle physicists hate me too.

What I’m most insulted by is that I’m not being blocked by an actual human being — instead, some half-assed algorithm has calculated that Shanghai Shiok! is filthy, filthy smut.

I’ve been racking my brains trying to figure out what makes my blog porn. First, I went through my search engine terms, noting all the naughty, smutty searches leading to this blog:

tall woman short man f**k
scantily clad women
love porn
asian latex escort
malaysian chinese girl sucking
bulls genitals
naked asian women white men
escort fetish shanghai
sexy dolls in pudong shanghai

Next, I thought of the blog posts these searches might have led to:

1. Panda Porn: I make fun of a Chinese box of chocolates with fornicating cartoon pandas all over it. Probably my most “porno” post, but really… it isn’t.
2. The Chinese aren’t rubbing the Bund Bull’s balls: I note that Chinese visitors to the Bull on the Bund don’t seem to rub its genitals for luck, the way people rub the balls of its cousin in New York City. Bronze bull balls, people. Not bouncing human male balls. Again, not porn.
3. Asians exploit lonely white guys: A post where I ask people what they think of a club flyer, and whether it sexualizes Asian women.
4. Loving a Shorter Man: My most personal post, where I discuss taller woman-shorter man couples. The post that receives all the “taller woman f**k short man” searches.
5. Bad reputation of mainland Chinese women: A discussion of how many Southeast Asians of Chinese descent look down on new arrivals from the mainland. The post mentions “prostitutes” and “escorts.”

Now, I’d like someone from WebFilter to look at these links and tell me how my content is pornographic (oh, a plea to deaf ears it is). More importantly, I’d like this someone to stop flagging Shanghai Shiok! as a porn site. I’m quite upset about being blocked by company filters — I know quite a few people who only surf the web from work, so this is costing me readers. Readers who really should be doing work at work, but hey, if you’re going to surf the web anyway, you might as well be reading me!

Note: I really would appreciate any help/advice on getting unblocked. Please feel free to reach me through the contact form. Thank you!

Update: Now I remember that Google AdSense rejected me because they couldn’t “access” my blog. I wonder how much this has to do with it.
