End the War in Afghanistan

It has been 10 years since the U.S. military began operations in Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. We lament the suffering, violence, and death on both sides of the conflict. Our scriptures and history teach us that war is not the answer to achieving the peace and security we are striving to build in this world.

It is time for the war in Afghanistan to end, starting with troop withdrawal this summer as President Obama has promised.

We cannot wait any longer, nor push back the timetable as some administration officials are pressuring President Obama to do. The costs are simply too great.

• The war in Afghanistan now costs more than $100 billion per year.  
• The human cost is even greater, with thousands of U.S. casualties, plus tens of thousands suffering from post-traumatic stress and other psychological disorders, and an alarming number committing suicide.
• Tens of thousands of Afghans, including women and children, have also died.

Tell President Obama and Vice President Biden to keep their commitment to start troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in July 2011.

We are now entering the 10th year since the U.S. military began operations in Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As a person of faith, committed to peace and nonviolence, I ask you to adhere to your July 2011 deadline for beginning troop withdrawal. I speak not as a military expert, but as a citizen seeking to apply my moral values to this most crucial issue. I lament the suffering, violence, and death on both sides of the conflict and recognize that war can never bring about the peace we strive to build in this world. This war is too costly for all of us: too many soldiers dead and wounded and Afghan lives and communities torn apart. Our nation needs the resources being spent on weapons and soldiers for jobs and help at home. I urge you to begin withdrawal of troops on schedule this summer and pursue nonmilitary solutions to protecting our nation from terrorism. You are in our prayers as you seek to lead our nation.
