MOSCOW, January 21 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia is ready to support Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the international security forces in 2014, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said after the negotiations with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai here on Friday. “Afghanistan is to ensure the country’s security and the independence of the country with its own forces after 2014, and Russia is ready to give a broad support in this issue,” he noted.

In reply to a journalist’s query to comment on the U.S. policy in Afghanistan Medvedev noted that “we are following very closely the situation in Afghanistan, the actions of the international security forces and the U.S. actions.” “We wish success to them in this mission. It should be done for the benefit of the Afghan people and regional security,” he pointed out.

Russia does not only observe their actions, but also helps them, Medvedev went on to say. “Russia has taken several responsible decisions for the assistance to Afghanistan and the international contingent so that international security forces could receive the necessary supplies in transit through Russia,” he remarked.

In reply to a question whether the United States makes some mistakes in Afghanistan Medvedev noted that “it is obvious that one who does nothing will make no mistakes.” The U.S. and international security forces have various incidents, the president believes. “Each such incident should be checked and investigated properly,” he remarked.

“As for strategic mistakes and major shortcomings in the activities” of international security forces, the time has not come for such analysis,” Medvedev indicated. “Let’s wait and see what will happen after 2014,” the president said. “I would like so that all international security forces, which are deployed in Afghanistan, would leave the country with honour and respect,” he underlined.
